TY - JOUR PY - 2019/12/14 Y2 - 2024/03/28 TI - Knowledge and practices about biomedical waste management among healthcare personnel in Tertiary Care Hospital, Rawalpindi JF - Journal of Rawalpindi Medical College JA - JRMC VL - 21 IS - 3 SE - Articles DO - UR - https://journalrmc.com/index.php/JRMC/article/view/1282 SP - AB - <p>Background: This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and practices of healthcare personnel about biomedical waste management.<br>Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted at Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi from the 1st of April 2018 to 31st of July 2018. 340 healthcare personnel comprising of 145 doctors, 145 nurses, 10 management team staff and 40 sanitary staff were included by convenient sampling. Those who were on leave were excluded. A questionnaire based on biomedical waste management rules 2005 by Federal government of Pakistan under the Environment Protection Act 1997 was developed, translated, approved from Rawalian Research forum and validated by a pilot study to assess knowledge and practices of health care staff about types of biomedical waste, rules of waste management, color coding of waste bins, segregation and storage of waste, personal protective equipment and programs conducted on biomedical waste management. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 22.<br>Results: Hundred percent of management team and 61.39% nurses had excellent knowledge regarding biomedical waste management.58.98% sanitary workers and 56.15% doctors had good knowledge about biomedical waste management.90% 0f management team, 89.69% nurses, 41.1% doctors had excellent practices while 39.03% sanitary workers had good practices and 43.03% sanitary workers showed poor practices regarding biomedical waste management.<br>Conclusion: Management team and nurses had excellent knowledge and practices regarding biomedical waste management. Doctors and sanitary workers had good knowledge but doctors showed excellent practices whereas sanitary workers had poor practices in dealing with biomedical waste</p> ER -
